Although part of the stamp issue honoring Abraham Lincoln's 150th birth anniversary, this stamp was issued on the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln -Douglas debates. Debates were conducted at Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charles, Galesburg, Quincy, and Alton, IL. Each debate attracted crowds of between 10,000 and 15,000 persons. The debates were for the 1858 contest for U.S. senator from Illinois. Douglas won the election. Lincoln became such a national figure that two years later he was elected president.
