The American lobster is the largest lobster, which are large marine crustaceans closely related to the crayfish and shrimp. Their tasty white meat is prized as a delicacy. Lobster fishing is an important industry. The American lobster lives along the Atlantic coast from Labrador to Virginia. It has been known to reach a length of three feet (90 cm) and a weight of 44 pounds (20 kg). In most lobsters, one pair of appendages forms two large and differently shaped claws. The narrower claw is called the cutter because it is used to slice dead fish. The heavier claw, called the crusher, has tooth-like bumps used for crushing clam shells and other hard objects.
