The design of this stamp is a depiction of the reconstructed blockhouse at Fort Nisqually, WA. The Americana series was made up of 27 different stamps conceived to tell a success story of the United States through concepts. John Steinbeck wrote in 1937: "It wasn't the Indians that were important, nor adventures, nor even getting out here. It was a whole bunch of people made into one big crawling beast ... it was westering and westering. Every man wanted something for himself, but the big beast that was all of them wanted only westering...."
