With the formal title “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” the Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place August 15-18, 1969, on a 600-acre farm near the New York hamlet of White Lake. The venue is a little more than 40 miles from the town of Woodstock. A total of 32 acts performed for an estimated 500,000 attendees and the festival is regarded as a pivotal moment in pop music history. The event originally was scheduled for Mills Industrial Park at Walkill, an estimated 50,000 attendance. As word spread of the expected numbers, local opposition increased and the local zoning board banned the event because planned portable toilets would not meet town code. The ban and subsequent venue change were a major publicity bonus.
