An island at the entrance to Manila Bay, Corregidor is three miles (5 km) off Bataan Peninsula. It is part of Cavite province of the Philippines. During World War II, U.S. and Filipino forces on Corregidor made a last effort to stave off a Japanese invasion. Bataan fell on April 9, 1942, and U.S. forces on Corregidor could no longer get supplies. On May 6, 1942, Lt. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright surrendered with more than 10,000 troops, civilians, and medical personnel. Corregidor was retaken in February 1945.
