Born near Taylor, Texas, Bill Pickett is best known for his trademark practice of subduing cattle by biting down on their upper lips. Pickett learned this method after watching a friend's bulldog bring down cattle by clamping down on the animals' snouts until they dropped to the ground in pain. The famous black cowboy turned "bulldogging" into a sport, appearing at rodeos across the country.
