Seals are a diverse and widely distributed group of mostly marine, aquatic mammals. The northern, or Alaskan, fur seal--Callorhinus ursinus--is an eared seal related to the sea lion. Hunted commercially for its thick inner coat, it was nearly extinct by the early-20th century. It has been protected by international treaty since 1911.
