An independent Ivy League institution in New York City, Columbia University was founded as King's College by the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1754. Columbia College was Columbia University's undergraduate college until 1983, when it became co-educational Barnard College. Founded in 1889, Barnard was an independent undergraduate college for women that has been affiliated with Columbia University since 1900.
