Commemorative issue Constitution sesquicentennial of launch
drawing of Frigate Constitution
Known as "Old Ironsides" because bullets would not penetrate its tough oak sides, the frigate Constitution was one of six frigates that comprised the first U.S. Navy. Launched in 1797, the ship carried a crew of 450 and 50 guns. It served in the undeclared naval war with France and in the Tripolitan War. In the War of 1812, the Constitution won battles with the British frigates Guerriere and Java. Scheduled to be scrapped in 1830, Oliver Wendell Holmes' poem Old Ironsides inspired a public movement to save it. It was restored in 1925 and is now moored in Boston.
