Carl Sandburg is credited with changing the course of American poetry. His first popular book, Chicago Poems, reflected his early association with the Social-Democratic Party and shocked many readers with its street slang and irregular verse structure. Sandburg also was prolific as a writer of prose. His two volumes on Abraham Lincoln, The Prairie Years and The War Years, were partially documented biographies.
