Another in the recent and expanding number of self-stick postage stamp, this design features a pine cone, also known as a pollen cone. A cone is the characteristic reproductive structure of conifers, such as the pine tree. There are two types of cones: male and female. The male cone is staminate, or pollen-producing; female cones are ovulate, or seed-bearing. Scales on a cone are highly modified, spore-bearing leaves. Male cones typically are short-lived; female cones may persist for a year or more.
