Riverboats achieved their charm in the United States primarily along the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers in the early 19th century. Most of the vessels were powered by steam, with twin double –acting pistons driving a paddlewheel. Boats with paddlewheels on the wide are termed “sidewheelers” and those with on the stern as “sternwheelers.” The paddle wheel was the first form of mechanical propulsion for a boat.
