Although video games did not achieve popularity until the 1980s, an early patent application was filed in 1947 (and issued the following year) for an electronic tennis game using an oscilloscope for display. A tic-tac-toe game was developed in 1952, and “Spacewar!” was produced in 1961. The classic “Pong,” given credit for spawning the video game industry, was introduced as an arcade game in 1972, with a home version three years later. While early games required mainframe or arcade-based devices, today video games are played on cell phone, home televisions, and all forms of home computers.
