Commemorative issue State flags - American Bicentennial
Kentucky
Shown is the state flag of Kentucky, part of a pane of stamps showing the flags of each of the 50 states.
The flag of Kentucky consists of the Commonwealth's seal on a navy blue field, surrounded by the words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" above and sprigs of goldenrod, the state flower, below. The flag was designed by Jesse Cox, an art teacher in Frankfort, Kentucky. The flag was adopted by the Kentucky General Assembly on March 26, 1918 and finalized in its present form in 1928. The seal of Kentucky depicts two friends embracing. The state motto: "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" circles them. The motto comes from the lyrics of "The Liberty Song," a patriotic song from the American Revolution.
