Author, humorist, playwright, and cartoonist James Thurber was honored with a stamp as part of the Literary Arts Series. Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 1894. Much of his work was completed during his tenure at the New Yorker magazine, where he went to work in 1927. He was a prolific writer, publishing thirty-one books that gave humorous views of life in America. Among his works are the short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and the play The Male Animal. He died in New York City on November 2, 1961. Ceremonies marking the issue of this stamp were held at the Thurber House in Columbus, where James Thurber lived with his parents and brothers from 1913 to 1917 while attending Ohio State University.
