Sojourner Truth

Born a slave in 1797 and with formal education, Sojourner Truth was a leader against slavery and for women's rights. She took the name "Sojourner" after escaping to the North. An active speaker for her cause, she often lashed out at slave owners. In 1852 she gave her famous Ain't I a Woman speech, which was critical of men who did not observe the rights of women.
