Charles Ives
Although considered one of the first American composers of major significance, Charles Ives generally was not recognized for his work during his lifetime. Ives was born in Danbury, CT, where his father—a former U.S. Army bandleader in the Civil War—Ives grew up listening to his father’s marching band play in the town square. A graduate of Yale University, he was an accomplished pianist. He composed two string quartets and additional works of chamber music. Perhaps his most memorable composition was his “Fourth Symphony.”
