Eugene Ormandy
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Eugene Ormandy began his career studying violin at the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music at the age of five. His first concerts were at the age of seven and he graduated from the academy at the age of 14 with a master’s degree. Moving to the United States in 1921, his first job was as a violinist in the Major Bowes Capital Theater Orchestra in New York City. Within five days he became concertmaster. Ormandy was best known as conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position he held for 44 years.
