This stamp design honored the 60th anniversary of Arbor Day, a varying date observed in many individual states by the planting of trees. Arbor Day first was celebrated in Nebraska. It was originated by Julius Sterling Morton, born April 22, 1832. Morton was an agriculturist, newspaper editor, secretary of the Nebraska Territory, and later U.S. secretary of agriculture.
