Sports utility vehicles -- more commonly known by their acronym, SUV – is a marketing term for a vehicle built on a light truck chassis that is similar to a station wagon. Not all SUVs have four-wheel drive, although many do. Daily use of SUVs generally is in urban areas on paved roads. The type of vehicle was extremely popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, with a drop off later as the cost of fuel increase substantially. SUVs generally have a much lower miles-per-gallon rating.
