After completion of the first bridge across the Missouri River in 1869, Kansas City became a transportation hub. Economic stability was assured with the arrival of the railroad in 1865. Today it is the junction of highway, rail, and water routes and an inland port. First permanent settlement at this river junction was a trading post established in 1821. A succession of small villages was founded in the decades that followed. The name "Kansas City" became official in 1889.
