Charles Darrow developed the game of “Monopoly” – the most commercially successful board game in U.S. history – in 1934 and sold it to Parker Brothers the following year. The board is based on Atlantic City, NJ. Since then, more than 750 million people have played Monopoly. The game has gone through some minor changes through the years, with a 2008 modification changing the colors of Mediterranean and Baltic Avenues from purple to brown in U.S. editions. Also, in 1995 Parker Brothers acknowledged that “Marin Gardens” is a misspelling. The firm apologized to the resident of Marven Gardens – a housing area outside of Atlantic City rather than a street name.
