A lawyer, politician, and general, John Sullivan attended the Continental Congress and then served in the siege of Boston. He was captured at the Battle of Long Island, and was exchanged in time to fight at Trenton and Princeton. He served for two years under George Washington. Sullivan's most effective campaigns were waged against Iroquois and loyalists along the New York frontier. Sullivan later served as chief executive of New Hampshire and as a federal judge.
