In 1699 Antoine Laumet de la Mothe Cadillac, a French army lieutenant, returned to France from Canada, urging the establishment of another post on the Detroit River to protect the fur trade from the English. Cadillac commanded the strategic position at Mackinac. Receiving a land grant and trade monopoly, he led an expedition by canoe from Quebec and founded Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit in 1701. Cadillac commanded this fort from 1704 until his appointment as governor of Louisiana in 1711. He took over his new post in 1713, but so quarreled with the colonists that he was recalled three years later.
