A native of Cincinnati, Adolph S. Ochs founded the Chattanooga, TN, Times in 1878 and acquired The New York Times in 1896 to strengthen his own financial situation. Ochs rescued the New York newspaper from near death and made it a highly respected publication. During his time, the paper distinguished itself through its coverage of the Russo-Japanese War, the sinking of the Titanic, World War I polar explorations, and Charles Lindbergh's solo flight to Paris.
