As a black pioneer, mountain man, fur trader, and scout, Jim Beckwourth was instrumental in opening the land west of the Sierra Nevada to settlers after the discovery of gold there in 1848. Beckwourth Pass was one of four main routes over the Sierra Nevada and later served as a pathway for railroads and highways.
