A whimsical cherub contemplating the enigma of romance graces the 1995 Love stamp, the fourteenth issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Shown is one of two cherubs included in Raphael's Renaissance masterpiece Sistine Madonna. The stamp was non-denominated because it had to be produced before the new postage rate was known. Its basic design came in two forms: sheets and self -adhesive panes. Stamps in the latter form are of a different dimension, and thus a somewhat different design, from that of the sheet stamp. Raphael's painting is one of the works that defined the harmonious beauty idealized by the Renaissance. It is on display at the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden, Germany.
