Circuses began as equestrian displays, which have been relegated to a minor role in today's circus performances. Many circuses, rather, present spectacles that are more appropriate to a Las Vegas revue. The majority of circus acts can be traced to antiquity, although the distinct form of entertainment called a circus was not created until 1768 in London.
