Three flights of the Gatun Locks, on the Atlantic side, raise the water level 85 feet (26 m) at Gatun Lake. After crossing the Gatun Lake, 25 miles (40 km), the canal route crosses the Continental Divide in the eight-mile-long (13 km) Gaillard Cut. The Pedro Miguel Locks then take the level of the canal to that of Miraflores Lake. Finally, two sets of Miraflores Locks lower the water to the sea level of the Pacific.
