Known as the “Train of the Stars,” the Super Chief was operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad between Chicago and Los Angeles. It was the first all-Pullman, Diesel-powered sleeping car train in the United States. The first Super Chief began Man 12, 1936, from Chicago’s Dearborn Station. An improved version of the train ran the 2,227 miles at an average of about 60 miles per hour. Originally a once-per-week run, as its popularity grew, the Super Chief moved to daily runs each direction.
