Jim Thorpe wins decathlon at Stockholm Olympics, 1912
Jim Thorpe competed, and won, both the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Sweden’s King Gustav V, in attendance at the events, told Thorpe, “You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world.” That Thorpe had begun playing minor league baseball in the United States in 1909 was not revealed until early 1913. He did not deny the report, but sought leniency … which Swedish Olympic officials granted and American Olympics officials did not. Thorpe was considered a professional athlete until rules of the 1912 Olympics, which were applied to Thorpe and led to his disqualification. Those same rules also provided that a challenge to an athlete’s eligibility should have been submitted to the Swedish Olympic Committee within 30 days of the event. Thorpe died in 1953. In 1982, the International Olympic Committee partially overturned its earlier decision by re-instating Thorpe as co-champion of both events. His family received gold medals the following year.
