Avant-garde art was introduced in the United States formally in 1913 at the Armory Show. Artists of this movement not only attempted to challenge traditional art, but also society in general. Among the approaches were to upset commerce, incensing moral values, and confusing the elite. Perhaps best-known among avant-garde artists was Salvador Dali, a master of surrealism. What is considered the movement’s downfall also may be cited as the beginning of “modern art.”
