This is one of eight stamps issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
first national park in the United States.

Depicted is a statue from the City of Refuge, an ancient sanctuary for taboo
breakers or victims of wars. It is located on a lava ledge on the southwestern
part of the island of Hawaii.

The national park movement began in the United States in 1870, when a group of
explorers recommended that a portion of the upper Yellowstone River be set
aside to protect its geothermal features, wildlife, forests, and unique scenery
for future generations.

From that movement came Yellowstone National Park and the U.S. national park
system.
