Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León and his fleet first spotted the coast of what he called “La Florida” some 500 years ago. It was Easter week, and the name chosen was meant to honor both the lush display of vegetation and the Spanish Easter celebration, Pascua Florida (“Feast of the Flowers”). So when the USPS set out to commemorate the quincentennial of this landmark event, it was only appropriate to provide a glimpse of the Florida Ponce de León witnessed upon his arrival — with flowers in abundance. Pink and red hibiscus nestle against yellow cannas, purple morning glories fill the block of four\'s center, and passionflowers spill over the stamp edges.
