Charlie Chaplin’s most memorable character was The Little Tramp … which has become an icon of the silent film era. The character was portrayed as a vagrant, good-hearted bumbler who tries to have the manners and dignity of a gentleman. The Little Tramp combined a willingness to take on available work while cunningly getting what he needed/wanted and staying out of the grasp of the authorities. The character debuted in the 1914 film, Kid Auto Races at Venice. The Little Tramp is known for his tight coat, derby hat, baggy pants, and a large pair of shoes, mustache, and a cane.
