The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located on the Mall in Washington, DC, between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The privately financed monument was dedicated in November 1982 and officially accepted by President Ronald Reagan on November 11, 1984 when he signed a document transferring the memorial to the U.S. Park Service. The walls of the V-shaped memorial are inscribed with the names of the more than 58,000 U.S. men and women who were killed or missing in the Vietnam War. Maya Ying Lin, a Yale architecture student, designed the memorial. More than 1,421 design proposals were submitted for review in the public competition.
