The first decade of the 20th century was one that saw thousands of immigrants streaming into the United States, principally from Europe. Ellis Island, just off New York City’s Manhattan, was the point through which most of the European immigrants were processed. Many came because of economic conditions in their homeland, or political or religious oppression, or merely to seek a new life in a “new world.”
