Volleyball was invented in 1895 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and popularized through the programs of the YMCA. The first national championship in the United States was held in 1919, and major collegiate championships began in the 1970s. Volleyball became a part of the Olympic Games in 1964. The U.S. Men's Team won the gold medal in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and the bronze medal in 1992. The U.S. Women's Team won the silver medal in 1984 and the bronze medal in 1992. Today, volleyball is the second-largest participation sport in the United States, with more than 42 million participants. There is indoor and outdoor competition for boys and girls, men and women, and co-ed teams.
