The design of this stamp shows pre-Columbian art, part of a series on customs, images, and traditions of native Americans whose tribes and ancient civilizations existed prior to Columbus's arrival. The Southwest culture area extends over present-day Arizona, southern Colorado, New Mexico, and southern Utah. Stone and wood sculpture, masks (including those used by Kachina dancers), and impressive dry-fresco mural paintings in underground chambers are among the many traditional ritual arts. Coiled baskets, made at least 2,000 years ago, mark the beginning of an art tradition that continues among Native American artists today.
