The scarlet tanager is commonly found in oak and pine forests in the eastern United States. The male in breeding plumage is the only North American bird with a red body and black wings and tail. Tanager is the common name for more than 220 species of bright-colored birds of the New World. Most species are tropical and subtropical, with only four species that winter in Central and South America, venturing north of Mexico in the summer. Tanagers feed on insects and fruit, with some species destroying insects harmful to trees and other plants. Some tanagers nest in trees and others in shrubs or ground crevices.
