Agaves include more than 300 species of plants with handsome foliage belonging to the family Agavaceae. They form long, stiff evergreen leaves in clumps from which tall, bare flower stems arise. Agave plants are used as houseplants. In the Southwest agaves are used also as landscape plants. Some common agaves have commercial value: tequila is fermented from certain Mexican species.
