Released seven years apart – in 1955 and 1962 – two polio vaccines are used today. Dr. Jonas Salk developed the first, which is an injected dose of dead poliovirus. Dr. Albert Sabin developed an oral vaccine using a live-but-reduced-strength virus. Between the two vaccines, polio has  been eradicated from most countries of the world.
