The Empire State building, built in 1930, required more than 200,000 cubic feet of Indiana limestone and granite. It is 102 stories high and was the tallest building in the world from 1931-1972. It is home to more than 1,000 businesses. Although a metal-plated tower at the top was designed as a Zeppelin port, only one Zeppelin landing was recorded. High winds were deemed too dangerous for such landings. In 1951, a broadcasting antenna was added.
