Joseph West was governor of the settlement Albermarle Point, later named Charles Town, where Charleston, SC, now stands. Shadoo was chief of the Kiawah Indian tribe, now extinct. West was part of the original settlement of Albermarle Point, which he chose to be farther away from St. Augustine and the Spanish. Shadoo's tribe was friendly. After a storm kept attacking Spaniards from pillaging Albermarle Point, it shared rich beds of oysters, wild turkey hunting grounds, and fresh meat with the colonists. Inland Indians had sided with the Spanish, and the two groups were responsible for destroying a settlement farther south and nearer St. Augustine.
