Louis Prang emigrated to the United States from Prussia by way of a number of European stops. He first printed architectural materials, then made leather goods, and finally turned to wood engraving. In 1856 he formed a partnership in lithography, printing business cards, announcements, and various forms of small advertising. The design of the stamp shown is an example of his Christmas cards. During the Civil War Prang printed maps and battle plans. He also produced prints of famous works of art.
