The Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria were outfitted at the port of Palos. Aiding Columbus in recruiting a crew were the brothers Martin Alonzo and Vincente Yanez Pinzon. Martin was given command of the Pinta and Vincente, command of the Nina. They left Palos on August 3, 1492, re-rigged the Nina in the Canary Islands, and sailed westward. Landfall was made on the morning of October 12, 1492, at an island in the Bahamas which Columbus named San Salvador.
