Hawaii
Shown is the state flag of Hawaii, part of a pane of stamps showing the flags of each of the 50 states.
The flag of Hawaii is called Ka Hae Hawaii. The Hawaii flag is a beautiful and symbolic depiction of the multi-fold facet of the island’s rich and vibrant traditions. This is also one of the flags that has been in use for decades and continues to be hoisted on top of several schools, homes and government buildings in the state.
The flag of Hawaii was designed by an officer of the British Royal Navy who was commissioned for the task by the Great Kamehameha in 1816. Due to this, the Hawaii flag carries a strong influence of the United Kingdom in its design. A small image of the Union Flag is depicted in the upper left corner of the Flag. This also symbolizes the island’s amiable association with the United Kingdom.
The insertion of the Union Flag in the Hawaii flag also stands for the alia, where an upright spear is fixed in the intersection of two spears. The three colors used in the flag’s design are red, blue and white which are the main colors in the US and flags as well. Underneath the picture of the Union Flag, eight horizontal stripes make up the rest of the flag.
These stripes on the flag of Hawaii depict Big Island of Hawaii, Niihau, Molokai, Oahu, Kahoolawe, Maui, Kauai and Lanai, which are the key islands that make up the state of Hawaii. However, it has been said that the stripes does not mean anything in particular and is just a simple design of blue, red and white lines. Initially, the flag had only seven stripes and the eighth was added later on.
