The buckboard's name comes from the jolting ride it provides its passengers. A flat-bottomed, hard-riding wagon, the buckboard was used in this country primarily toward the end of the 19th century. It has four large, spoked wheels. Its cross springs --when such existed--were made of flexible wood rather than metal. This style of wagon was commercially produced and homemade.
