Developed in the 1940s, antibiotics have become the most frequently prescribed medications in medicine today.  They cure disease by acting against bacteria. Penicillin, the first antibiotic, was discovered accidently from a mold culture. From that start has come more than 100 antibiotic varieties. Each antibiotic is effective with specific types of infections. It is important that, when prescribed, one takes the entire course of antibiotics.
