Harvey T. Dunn is the artist whose charcoal drawing, The Battle of Marne, France, was chosen to illustrate the stamp honoring World War I veterans. A native of South Dakota, Dunn studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was invited by Howard Pyle to study at Pyle's school in Delaware. Dunn's paintings of early South Dakota life established him as an illustrator, muralist, and portrait painter. He provided illustrations for leading publications of the time and taught at the Grand Central School in New York City. During World War I he was assigned as an illustrator with the American Expeditionary Forces. Following the war he established the Dunn School of Illustration at Leonia, NJ.
